A woman and a child have died after a serious smash in Sydney’s southwest.
Emergency services were called to the Hume Motorway just outside of Menangle Park, after a cement truck and silver SUV collided.
The female driver and a child died at the scene.
In a statement, NSW Police said the man driving the truck was not physically injured and was taken for mandatory testing.
Paramedics and the Toll Ambulance Rescue helicopter are treating a second child who suffered injuries.
Earlier, the Transport Management Centre confirmed that one person had been trapped in the incident.
“Emergency services and traffic crews are on site working to free a trapped person and a helicopter is attending,” it said in a statement.
Motorists are being asked to avoid the area and expect heavy congestion.
All northbound motorists are being diverted off the motorway at Picton Rd and should consider using the M1 Princes Motorway or Appin Rd instead.
Southbound motorists are being diverted at Narellan Rd where they can use Appin Rd to travel south.
Police have established a crime scene which will be examined by specialist police from the crash investigation unit.
A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.
Anyone with information or dashcam footage is urged to call police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
