A woman has been arrested and charged with murder after an eight-year-old boy was found dead in the central Queensland region on Saturday morning.
Officers attended a Waterloo Street property in the Rockhampton suburb of Berserker – 643km north of Brisbane – about 2.20am, in response to a welfare check.
The boy was located unresponsive.
A crime scene was established with detectives and officers from Rockhampton’s Protection and Investigation Unit investigating.
“His death is being treated as suspicious,” police said in a statement.
A woman, 36, has since been arrested and charged with murder.
Capricornia Police District Detective Acting Inspector Luke Peachey said it was a tragic day for the family of the boy.
Inspector Peachey was tight-lipped on details surrounding the boy’s injuries and the relationship between the boy and the woman, only saying they were “known to each other”.
“The investigation is only a few hours old but hopefully in the next day or so we should have a clearer idea of what’s happened,” he said.
“We’re speaking to a number of witnesses. We’re mapping it together … at this stage we’re still contacting some family members to make sure they know.”
