Author and podcast creator Victoria Devine has taken to social media to share the sentence you need to reach your financial goals for 2023.
Ms Devine, the author of two books and the creator of the She’s On The Money podcast, says a reluctance to say the sentence “no, it’s not in my budget” is one of her biggest financial “killers” in 2023.
With more than two million downloads, She’s On The Money has become one of the popular personal finance podcasts in the country.
Along with a book by the same name and a second titled Investing With She’s On The Money, Ms Devine has built a significant following among millennial women, towards whom her advice is aimed.
“I used to feel so awkward saying, ‘Oh sorry, it’s not in my budget,’” Ms Devine said on Tiktok.
“It made me feel uncomfortable and I can be quite introverted,” she said.
“I also care what people think – I know you’re not meant to, but I do.”
Ms Devine said everyone needed different coping strategies when prickly financial decisions arise.
“I found the best way was actually sharing my financial goals.”
“How about we catch up, and I’ll tell you about how I’m going with my debt progress,” Ms Devine offered as an example.
She says other examples of coping strategies include making coffees at home and going for a walk with a friend rather than going out to breakfast.
“Honestly, I promise it will make it so much easier – you just don’t have to say ‘no’ and that’s it.”
In an excerpt from Investing With She’s On The Money published in The Australian in September, Devine encouraged more young people to invest their money, even if they only had as little as $2000 to spare.
“There are plenty of self-made millionaires out there, proving you don’t need to be rich to get started,” Devine wrote.
“Any tiny amount you can set aside to invest can help grow your wealth.”
She’s On The Money Budget Journal is set to be released in January.
