Police have charged a 22-year-old man with dangerous driving offences after he was allegedly caught speeding at 280km/h.
NSW Police said highway patrol officers spotted the blue Volkswagen Golf R hatchback on the Hume Highway at 9.30am on Monday November 7.
A statement published by police said the turbocharged Golf was “allegedly travelling 280km/h in a 110km signposted area on the Hume Motorway, Mittagong”.
Facebook users have taken aim at the “absolutely ridiculous” speed clocked by the turbocharged hatchback, suggesting it may be “fake news”.
People logged into the social media platform questioned the veracity of the police claim, suggesting “that radar device needs some serious calibration”, “ain’t no golf doing 280kph” and “280 that cant be right surely!”.
The Volkswagen Golf R is officially limited to 250km/h.
But modified examples have been clocked at much higher speeds.
Youtube user AutoTopNL published a video of a similar VW Golf R in 2020 that showed the car reach an indicated top speed of 283km/h, which an independent GPS device verified as a true speed of 272km/h.
The Golf R is one of Volkswagen’s most popular models, combining a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with all-wheel-drive traction and a swift-shifting dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Police said the driver of the Golf busted in NSW’s Southern Highlands will face court in the near future, and that “his driving privileges have been withdrawn”.
